How to recognize a genuine producer at the Scansano market?

The best clue is that they can name their farm, tell you where it is located, and explain precisely what they produce themselves. At the market in Scansano, simply ask: "Where do you grow or make this?" A producer usually answers without hesitation, with concrete details about the harvest, processing, or season. A vendor may also offer good products without being their producer: it's not a scam, but it's not direct sales.

Look at the label on bottles and packaged products: the name and address of the farm or manufacturer must be indicated. For a bottle of Morellino di Scansano DOCG, look for the full designation and the tax seal on the bottle; this attests to the appellation, not that the person at the stand grew the grapes. For oil, honey, or cheese, ask about the origin of the raw materials and whether production takes place on the farm. A precise answer is worth more than rustic decor or a "local" sign.

Finally, compare products and prices, then ask for a receipt if you buy. Be especially wary of vague answers — "it's from around here" with no place name or producer — and of products presented as homemade without a label or explanation. And don't necessarily expect to pay less: direct sales are not always the cheapest.

In Scansano, don't let the decor choose for you: the most photogenic stand is not necessarily the one with the best surprise in store for you.
