How can I visit Monte Argentario by car?

To visit the Monte Argentario by car, first join Orbetello, then take the SP 161 on the road that crosses the lagoon towards Porto Santo Stefano. You can also reach the promontory via the tombolo of the Giannella, then follow the signs towards the villages. Between Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, allow about 11 km and 15 to 20 minutes without traffic; in summer, allow more time, especially at the hours when people arrive at the beach.

The car helps to reach the coves and the various points along the coast, but it will not always drop you off at the water's edge: some beaches require a walk from the road, and parking spots fill up quickly in high season. The centers of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole have paid parking and limited traffic zones (ZTL), whose hours may vary depending on the period. Keep an eye on the signs and park on the outskirts rather than blindly following the GPS into the old town center. The scenic SP 65 offers a more coastal route, but some stretches are narrow: take your time and don't take it if you're not comfortable on winding roads.

In Monte Argentario, the car mainly serves to connect your desires: don't turn every bend into a parking hunt, otherwise you'll miss the pleasure of the drive. Choose a spot as your goal and let the landscape do the rest.
