Where to stay in Tuscany without a car?

Without a car, stay in Florence if you want to limit the changes and visit several cities: the regional trains easily connect Pisa, Lucca, Prato and Pistoia. From Florence, allow about 1 hour for Pisa and 1 h 20 to 1 h 40 for Lucca, depending on the train. Choose accommodation within walking distance of Santa Maria Novella station, especially if you arrive with luggage.

For a quieter stay, you can sleep in Pisa , or Lucca : both have a train station and can be visited on foot. Siena also works as a base, but the connections to Florence often take around 1 h 30 by train or thereabouts 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 by bus ; check the timetables, especially in the evening and on Sundays. The small hilltop towns of Chianti and Val d'Orcia are less simple without a car: buses are less frequent and connections can eat up a good part of the day.

For the coast of the Maremma, choose instead Grosseto if you want to stay near the train, but reaching the beaches requires a bus and the services vary depending on the season. Avoid booking an isolated agriturismo thinking you can improvise the trips: without a car, it's better to sleep in town, near a train station or bus stop, and check the timetables for your dates.

In my opinion, it's better to have a base that is a little less picture-postcard but lively in the evening than a sublime hamlet where you watch for the last bus like a treasure.
