To rent a car in Italy, the best starting point is a comparison site, then a check of the price and conditions directly with the rental company. There is no single website that is always the cheapest: the rate changes depending on the dates, the pick-up location and the supplier. Compare the same vehicle with the same times, and look at the total price, not just the price displayed at the start.
Before booking, check the amount of the deductible, the sum blocked on the bank card, the type of card accepted and the cancellation conditions. Insurance sold by the comparison site does not necessarily replace the one offered at the counter: read carefully what is covered and what you will have to pay upfront in case of damage. For Tuscany and Maremma, a car is practical outside the cities, but avoid taking it to visit the historic centres: limited traffic zones can lead to fines, sometimes sent several months later. Also choose a pick-up location suited to your itinerary; the airport is not always the cheapest option once the fees are added.
