In Grosseto, the sea is about 10 km from the center, at Marina di Grosseto : you'll find a long sandy beach and a generally gradual entry into the water, handy for wading. The water can be clear when the sea is calm, but don't expect constant transparency: wind, waves and the day's conditions greatly change the look of the coast. By car, allow about 15 to 20 minutes from the center, depending on traffic.
Marina di Grosseto is the most developed part, with beach establishments and free-access sections. For a more natural setting, look towards Principina a Mare or the beach of Marina di Alberese, in the Maremma park; the latter is less urban, so bring water and sun protection. In July and August, the beaches can be quite busy, while June and September are often quieter, with swimming that depends more on the weather. Water quality is monitored during the bathing season, but temporary bans may occur: check the signs on site before swimming.
