Yes, you can request the cancellation, but a medical problem does not automatically entitle you to a ticket refund. If you cancel yourself, the refund depends on the fare conditions: a non-refundable ticket is generally not refundable, even with a medical certificate. The airline may sometimes offer a change or a credit voucher, but this is not guaranteed.
If you have cancellation insurance, contact them quickly and check that your situation is covered: a serious illness occurring after taking out the policy may be covered, whereas a pre-existing condition or certain exclusions may result in a refusal. Ask your doctor for a certificate stating that you cannot travel, then keep the invoices and the exchanges with the insurance company. Notify the company before departure : failing to show up for boarding can complicate your procedures. In France, even if the ticket is not refundable, you can request a refund of certain airport taxes if you do not take the flight.
