Our tip

Pitigliano, the «Little Jerusalem», rises from its volcanic tuff plateau like a fairy-tale vision — its medieval houses and labyrinthine alleys carved into the rock are one of the most photographed images of hidden Tuscany. Staying in an agriturismo in Pitigliano means choosing an exceptional living environment in the most singular territory of Maremma, just steps from a living medieval village that blends Etruscan history, Sephardic culture and local gastronomy.

The municipality of Pitigliano belongs to the tuff triangle together with Sorano and Sovana, three villages linked by the famous vie cave Etruscan — corridors carved 8-10 metres deep into the volcanic rock more than 2500 years ago. An agriturismo in the area allows you to explore these sites on foot or by bike, and to access the rock-cut necropolises of the Città del Tufo and the archaeological museum in just a few minutes. Bianco di Pitigliano DOC, a mineral white wine produced on volcanic tuff soils, pairs perfectly with local fish and cheeses.

The area is also close to the Saturnia thermal baths (30 km), the Etruscan coast (Orbetello, Capalbio 45 km away) and the Maremma Park (1 hour). The tuff hill landscape around Pitigliano is particularly beautiful at golden hour — photographers travel from all over Italy to capture the silhouette of the village on its promontory.
