Comment on noteThe wine
Today I invite you to discover an unexpected facet of Tuscany, the one where Merlot expresses itself with a particularly distinctive elegance. Far from the beaten paths of Sangiovese, this Casalferro from Ricasoli is an intimate encounter with a wine that has captured my attention through its finesse and balance.
Nestled in the heart of Gaiole in Chianti, the Ricasoli estate, whose history is deeply rooted in the Tuscan landscape, offers us this Toscana IGT. This wine comes from the Vigna Casalferro plot, a place where Merlot, the sole grape variety of this cuvée, finds remarkable expression. Every bunch is the fruit of meticulous work, reflecting the estate's commitment to the quality and authenticity of its terroir.
The Casalferro 2020 reveals itself in an intense ruby robe, limpid and of beautiful consistency. On the nose, I perceive a balanced aromatic profile, where ripe black fruits blend harmoniously with notes of vanilla and spices, without ever overpowering. On the palate, the structure is measured, with present but silky tannins, offering a balanced progression between freshness and body. The finish is persistent, prolonging the fruity and spicy sensations. This wine is the result of fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks, followed by maceration of 14 to 18 days. Its aging of 21 months in tonneaux and barriques, including 30% new wood, gives it complexity and a delicate patina.
This Casalferro is a wine that favors drinkability without excessive concentration, which makes it an ideal companion for many dishes. Imagine it alongside grilled meat, a flavorful ragù with intense flavors, or even with semi-aged cheeses. It will also enhance the more rustic dishes of Tuscan cuisine. I recommend serving it between 16 and 18 °C in large glasses to fully appreciate its aromas. A light decanting can be beneficial, especially if you have the chance to taste a large format. It is a wine I recommend for its assertive personality, perfect for informal convivial moments as well as more elaborate dinners.
