The wine

Poggio Nibbiale 2023: the soul of Morellino

Let me guide you toward a discovery that recently delighted my taste buds. This Morellino di Scansano from the Poggio Nibbiale estate is an invitation to the Tuscan Maremma, a region where sun and earth meet to give birth to wines of rare authenticity. It embodies the freshness and liveliness I expect from a young Sangiovese.

The heart of the Maremma: Poggio Nibbiale in Scansano

It is south of Grosseto, in the light-bathed hills of Scansano, that the Poggio Nibbiale estate cultivates its Morellino. This appellation, Morellino di Scansano DOCG, reflects a unique terroir, where the warm climate and mineral-rich soil offer the Sangiovese grape, here called Morellino, ideal conditions to express itself fully. I find it fascinating to see how the same grape can take on such different nuances depending on the land that hosts it.

This wine is the fruit of a vinification that respects Tuscan tradition. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, at controlled temperature, a method that, I have learned, is essential for preserving the freshness and aromatic intensity of the fruit. Its aging, lasting 6 to 12 months, also takes place in steel or sometimes in wood, which gives it a fine structure without masking its fruity character. I appreciate this approach that highlights the purity of the fruit.

When I pour this Morellino, its brilliant ruby color immediately catches my eye, promising beautiful liveliness. On the nose, I am greeted by frank, delicious aromas of cherry and small red fruits, to which are added light spicy notes evoking the landscapes of the Tuscan countryside. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious balance, with soft tannins and a pleasant persistence. It is a wine that, despite its youth, already offers beautiful complexity and an elegance that charms me.

An ideal companion for the table

This Morellino di Scansano from Poggio Nibbiale is a wine I strongly recommend pairing with moments of conviviality. It will be an excellent companion for grilled or roasted red meats, where its soft tannins will pair well with the texture of the meat. I can also perfectly imagine this wine with aged cheeses, whose richness will be balanced by its fruity freshness. Feel free to serve it with a good rustic soup, for an authentic and comforting tasting experience. It is a wine that invites sharing and the discovery of the flavors of Tuscany, a true favorite that I am delighted to share with you.

In Maremma, the Sangiovese basks in the marine sun and becomes much rounder and fruitier than a classic Chianti: bring out the pecorino stagionato board, it's the perfect pairing!
