Rosso di Montalcino is the "little brother" of Brunello. You'll often find it on restaurant menus, even in Maremma. It's a DOC red wine, made 100% from Sangiovese grapes, like its elder sibling. The difference? It is aged for less time in barrel and bottle than Brunello, which makes it more accessible in terms of price and drinkability. It is fruitier, less tannic, and therefore easier to drink young. When you order a glass of local red wine without wanting to break the bank or wait hours for the wine to open up, it's often Rosso di Montalcino that you choose. It pairs well with simple local cuisine.
