An eSIM is a SIM card that doesn't exist in plastic form: it's built into your phone and activated by scanning a QR code or through your carrier's app. For you heading to the Maremma, that changes everything. You buy a data plan before you leave, activate it when you land in Pisa or Florence, and you no longer have to hunt for a tobacco shop or kiosk at the airport. One caution, though: in the Maremma, signal becomes scarce as soon as you leave the villages, especially on the roads that run down toward Massa Marittima or into the inland hills of Scansano. Download your offline maps before you go, because an eSIM can't pick up a signal where there is no antenna.
