How can I use an eSIM abroad?

To use an eSIM abroad, first check that your phone is compatible and unlocked, then buy a plan covering your destination country and install it before departure, with a Wi-Fi connection. You can usually add it by scanning a QR code or from the provider's app. Read the activation terms carefully: depending on the plan, its validity may start at installation or only upon first connection to the local network. A travel eSIM often provides mobile data, but not necessarily a number for calls or texts.

Upon arrival, in your phone's settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line if the provider requires it. To avoid a hefty bill, disable data roaming on your regular SIM; you can keep it active to receive calls or texts, but check the fees with your operator. Keep WhatsApp linked to your usual number if you want to keep using it. Before buying, compare the amount of data, the duration and the countries covered: plans range from a few days to several weeks and generally cost from a few euros to several dozen, depending on the volume chosen. In Tuscany, also download your offline maps: coverage can be less consistent in rural areas of the Maremma.

In the narrow streets, your phone can quickly go from guide to mere camera: keep your eyes up, the most beautiful detours don't always show up on the screen!
