To swim in Tuscany, aim for June to September ; for warmer water with fewer people, September is often the best compromise. The official swimming season generally runs from April 1st to September 30th, but in spring, the sea remains cool: in May and June, its average temperature can hover around 19 °C.
In July and August, the water is usually the warmest, often around 23 à 25 °C, and the days are ideal for the beach. In return, August is the busiest month, with heavy crowds on the coast and often more expensive accommodation. In September, the sea generally retains the heat accumulated during the summer, while the beaches quiet down after the high season; however, there may be more windy or rainy days. If you are sensitive to the cold, don't count on swimming in May or early June: a sunny day doesn't guarantee pleasant water.
