Orbetello is mainly worth the trip for its lagoon landscape and access to two long sandy beaches, but the town itself is not a seaside resort. The center sits in the middle of the lagoon: it is pleasant for a stroll and for birdwatching, but you don't swim there as on a beach. If you are primarily looking for a seaside atmosphere, plan to head to the nearby tombolos rather than staying in town.
The Feniglia is the best choice if you like walking or cycling: its beach stretches for about 6 km, with a wooded nature reserve behind it, crossed by a car-free path. You sometimes have to walk quite a while to get away from the access points and find a quieter spot. The Giannella also offers a long sandy beach, with developed sections and freer ones. In summer, especially in July and August, the most convenient access points can be crowded; leave early if you want to avoid the crowds and the heat.
In my opinion, Orbetello works well for combining nature, swimming and a few hours in a lively town center, provided you have a car or organize your travel well. Spring and autumn are more pleasant for walks and birdwatching; flamingos may be present in the lagoon, but seeing them is never guaranteed. If you mainly want rocky coves or very clear water, also explore the area of theArgentario.
