Is Orbetello beautiful?

Yes, Orbetello is pretty, especially for its natural setting, but the town centre alone doesn't necessarily justify the detour. The old town occupies a narrow strip of land in the middle of the lagoon: the walk is pleasant, with beautiful views over the water and the Monte Argentario. As for architecture, expect a small lively centre rather than a monumental ensemble; the interest lies mainly in the contrast between the town, the lagoon and the sandbars that surround it.

For nature and swimming, the two tombolos are the real asset: Feniglia and Giannella each offer several kilometres of beach. At Feniglia, a dune and pine forest reserve runs along the sand; you can walk or cycle there, but in the height of summer the easiest access points are crowded. The lagoon is also interesting for birdwatching: flamingos are generally more visible from autumn to spring, with no guarantee of spotting any. If you're looking for a wild and isolated beach in July or August, Orbetello may therefore disappoint you; off-season, the light on the lagoon and the walks make you want to linger more.

In Orbetello, it's better to put the 'monument hunting' mode aside and let the stroll decide the programme. It's a stop to be savoured without chasing after must-sees.
