When and where to observe flamingos in Orbetello?

The best time to see flamingos is from Orbetello, is from autumn to early spring, with more birds in general in winter. Some leave for their breeding sites in spring and summer; a few sometimes remain, but numbers can be much lower. Their presence and where they gather vary according to the lagoon's conditions, so no sighting is guaranteed.

To observe them, head for the Ponente lagoon : you can try your luck from the lungolaguna, near the town, or follow the trails and reach the observation points of theOasi WWF Laguna di Orbetello, at Ceriolo, on the Albinia side. Bring binoculars and stay quiet; from a distance, the birds are harder to make out. The oasis's opening hours and guided tours change with the season: check them before you go. If you extend your stay southward, Lake Burano and Capalbio offer another wetland where you can look for flamingos, but there too, their presence depends on the time and current conditions.

The lagoon plays a bit of hide-and-seek: sometimes, a simple pink glint is enough to turn the landscape into a painting. Look at the reflections too, not just the birds!
