How can I visit the Orbetello lagoon?

You can discover the lagoon by bike aroundOrbetello, then enter theWWF oasis to observe the birds. For the bike tour, start from theOrbetello Scalo station: the loop is about 20 km, on flat terrain, and passes along the dyke between the lagoons, the Feniglia reserve, and sections of cycle path. Allow a few hours and stay careful at crossings and short stretches on the road. In the Feniglia pine forest, paths lead to the beach or to observation points on the lagoon side. Flamingos and other birds are mostly visible in autumn and winter, with no guarantee of seeing them on every visit.

Access to the WWF oasis is separate from the walk around the lagoon: its entrance is on the SS Aurelia, at km 148.3, and it is not accessible on foot or by bike. In autumn and winter, the oasis is normally open to individual visitors on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 9 am to 4 pm, with last entry at 14 h ; the self-guided visit requires no booking. Opening hours change with the season, and the oasis closes in case of weather alerts: call before setting off at 388 4231098. Wear closed shoes and bring binoculars if you have any. As the price is not always stated in advance, check it by phone.

At the lagoon, it is better to savour the reflections than to chase the perfect photo: the birds, for their part, do not always feel like posing!
