The Maremmano is generally a horse calm, intelligent and solid, but not a sluggish horse: it has temperament, energy and real presence. It was bred to work outdoors with the butteri and cattle, sometimes in harsh conditions; it is therefore known for being hardy, comfortable on varied terrain and able to keep its balance under exertion.
In the saddle, it can be reliable and pleasant, especially on trail rides, provided it is well trained and given consistent instructions. That said, I would not present it as automatically suitable for a beginner: its size and strength require a rider who knows how to stay calm, and its temperament also depends a great deal on the individual, its age and its training. If you book a ride on a Maremma, ask the stable instead which horse matches your level; the breed alone guarantees neither identical behavior nor an easy mount.
