What is the height of the Vie Cave?

The walls of the Vie Cave can reach about 20 meters high, but the height varies a lot from one passage to another: some are clearly less deep. Around Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano, you will therefore find sunken paths of different sizes, rather than a uniform height. One sometimes reads estimates of up to 25 meters, but it is better to remember "up to about twenty meters" as a general order of magnitude.

A subtle point: this refers to the height of the tufa walls bordering the path, not to a depth that is identical along the entire route. Depending on the place, the trail can be more open or very tight between the walls. In the most sunken sections, little light gets in and the ground can stay damp; bring shoes with good grip, especially after rain. The Vie Cave are not all laid out in the same way, so the sense of height also depends on the stretch you choose to walk.

The most striking thing is not looking for the tallest wall, but seeing these paths emerge in the landscape like secret passages. It is a complete change from the open panoramas around Pitigliano!
