What hikes are there on Monte Argentario?

At Monte Argentario, you'll find easy coastal trails as well as longer routes through the maquis, especially towards the coves and the old towers. For a short outing, the lighthouse path starts from the jetty of la Pilarella at Porto Santo Stefano: allow about 2 km and 40 to 50 minutes. Depuis la Via del Sole, the loop to Cala Grande beach is about 8.8 km and takes nearly 2 h 30 ; the descent is steep, so it's not a beach stroll in flip-flops.

For a more demanding hike, the round trip from the Fortezza Spagnola to Cala del Gesso is listed as about 10.6 km and 3 h 20. The final descent is steep, with rocky sections: good shoes are necessary, and plan for the return uphill. There are also routes to the Torre di Capodomo, the Torre dell’Argentiera or the ridges; some exceed 15 km and take the whole day. In the height of summer, set out early: the sun and lack of shade make the climbs grueling. Bring water, and check the trail markers or a local map before setting off, as the published times don't necessarily include breaks or swimming.

On the Argentario, the towers and ridges often give the walk more character than the cove at the end of the trail — enough to make you raise an eyebrow at the map!
