What can you do in Castiglione della Pescaia?

À Castiglione della Pescaia, you can combine a stroll through the old town, a swim and a trip to the nature reserve of Diaccia Botrona. Start by climbing up the cobbled lanes to the ramparts and the medieval castle: the centre is on a slope, so bring good shoes. Allow about 1 to 2 hours to wander around, visit the church of San Giovanni Battista and head back down to the harbour and the seafront. In the evening, the atmosphere is lively, especially in summer; in the middle of August, traffic and parking can be a hassle.

For the beach, you can stay near the centre or go to the Rocchette, a few kilometres away, where the coastline alternates between sand, pine forest and rocky stretches. Some areas are equipped with beach establishments; check prices and availability in high season, as they vary. If you prefer nature, the Diaccia Botrona is explored on foot and allows you to observe birds; the Casa Rossa Ximenes presents the history of the marshland reclamation, but check its opening hours before setting off.

With a car, you can also drive to Punta Ala, about 15 km, or visit Vetulonia for its Etruscan remains. For a car-free day, the old town, the harbour and the beach are already enough to fill the schedule.

My advice: don't turn the day into a hunt for kilometres, Castiglione is best savoured when you leave a little room for the unexpected. The loveliest discoveries are not always the ones you had checked off!
