11. What are the tourist sites in Castiglione della Pescaia?

The main sites to see in Castiglione della Pescaia are the medieval village, the port, the beaches and the nature reserve of Diaccia Botrona. In the old town, climb up the cobbled alleys to the ramparts: allow about 1 to 2 hours to stroll and enjoy the views over the coast. The castle overlooks the village, but it is private and generally difficult to visit; it's better not to plan a visit of the interior. You can also stop by the church 3. San Giovanni Battista, then head back down to the port-canal and the seafront.

For nature, the Casa Rossa Ximenes, at the entrance to the Diaccia Botrona reserve, presents the history of the draining of the marshes and the local landscape. The reserve is best suited to birdwatching and a quiet walk; allow 1 to 2 hours depending on your itinerary. The museum's opening hours change with the season, so check them before setting off. As for the sea, the sandy beaches line the pine grove: in July and August, they are busy and the beach establishments charge a fee, even though free sections exist.

For a day trip, combine the village and the port in the morning, then the beach or the reserve in the afternoon. If you have two days, you can follow this itinerary between Grosseto and Castiglione to add a nature stop.

The real little twist is not to reduce Castiglione to a beach stop: the contrast between the village and the marshes gives it a charm all its own. Keep the reserve to break up the seaside rhythm, you won't regret it!
