What are the tourist attractions in Massa Marittima?

À Massa Marittima, start with the piazza Garibaldi : around this medieval square are the Duomo San Cerbone, in Romanesque and Gothic style, the Palazzo del Comune and the Palazzo del Podestà. The latter houses the archaeological museum, with prehistoric and Etruscan collections. A few minutes' walk away, also look at the Fonte dell’Abbondanza and its astonishing fresco of the Tree of Fertility, discovered during work in 1999.

Climb up to the Torre del Candeliere and the Sienese fortress: the tower dates from 1228, and the Sienese integrated it into their defensive system after conquering the town in 1335. The visit gives access to a viewpoint over the rooftops, but expect steps. The full-price ticket is listed at 4 € ; check the opening hours before going, as they vary by season. To understand the importance of the mines in local history, the Museo della Miniera complements the visit well. Allow about half a day for the historic center and a museum, more if you want to visit several collections without rushing.
