What are the villages near Castell'Azzara?

The villages closest to Castell'Azzara are Piancastagnaio, Sorano and Santa Fiora ; a little further on, you can also visit Pitigliano and Abbadia San Salvatore. As the crow flies, they are located about 9 à 11 km for the first three, but the mountain roads lengthen the journeys: allow around 20 minutes by car to Sorano and more depending on the route and traffic for the others.

Sorano and Pitigliano are good choices if you want to discover the tuff towns of southern Maremma; Pitigliano is about 24 km by road, i.e. half an hour of driving. For a mountain atmosphere, look instead towards Santa Fiora, on the slopes of the Amiata, and Piancastagnaio, in the province of Siena. Abbadia San Salvatore, known for its abbey, is reached in about 22 km and 25 to 30 minutes by car.

You can add Semproniano or Roccalbegna to a loop if you have the whole day, but check the times on your GPS: here, the small winding roads often take more time than the kilometres suggest. A car is the most practical solution; buses exist, but the schedules can be inconvenient for linking several villages.

The tuff towns have a little fairy-tale scenery feel, while those of the Amiata invite you to slow down: choose your atmosphere rather than trying to check everything off!
