What are the most beautiful beaches of Follonica?

À Follonica, look first Pratoranieri for the fine sand, the shallow seabed and easy access by bike or on foot from the town centre: it's convenient with children, but the area is busy in summer. Just to the north, Il Boschetto offers a more shaded setting thanks to the pine grove behind the beach; you'll find free sections and beach establishments there.

For a beach with a historic landmark, choose Torre Mozza, about 6 km du centre, just beyond the boundaries of Follonica, on the Piombino side. The tower is at the water's edge and a rocky outcrop lies near the shore: handy for watching fish, but bring water shoes if you don't like walking on rocks. Carbonifera, a little further on, is popular for its dunes and pine grove; the car park is close by, followed by a short walk.

If you're up for an excursion, Cala Violina, in the municipality of Scarlino, is worth the trip for its cove and its trail through the Mediterranean scrub. From the Val Martina car park, allow about 1,8 km à pied ; in season, access is limited and booking is required. There is no shade and no bins on the beach: bring water, a parasol and something to carry your rubbish back out.

Torre Mozza has that little something extra: you come for the sea, but your gaze ends up drifting to the tower — far more fun than watching your towel all day.
