Nearby Pratoranieri, aim first Il Boschetto : this part of the coastline is sandy, with a pine grove behind the beach and free areas. The sea stays shallow for some distance, convenient with children, but the area is busy in mid-summer. Pratoranieri is located about 5 km from the center of Follonica ; you can get there by bike via the coastal path. For a more sheltered beach, head towards Torre Mozza and Carbonifera, a little further north: sand, pine grove and shallow water, with establishments and free sections.
In Follonica itself, the long sandy beach is the easiest to access: developed areas alternate with free beaches. It is well suited for quiet swimming, but don't expect a wild cove. If you're looking for a natural landscape instead, Cala Violina, south of Follonica, is worth the trip: from the Val Martina parking lot, allow about 1.5 km on foot on a trail. In summer, access is regulated and booking is mandatory; during the 2026 season, the booking fee costed 1 € per person et le parking 10 € per car. As the rules may change from one year to the next, check them before leaving. Bring water and closed shoes: there is no direct car access to the beach.
