What are the disadvantages of eSIMs?

The main disadvantages of an eSIM are compatibility limited to certain phones, an installation that requires an internet connection and, depending on the plan, the absence of traditional calls or SMS. Before buying, check that your phone supports eSIMs and that it is not locked to a carrier: otherwise, activation may fail. The download often takes a few minutes, but you can get stuck if you don't have Wi-Fi or network at the time of installation. Also keep the QR code or instructions until the line works.

Travel plans are sometimes data-only. You can then use WhatsApp or another app to call, but you may not necessarily receive a bank verification SMS on your usual number. Some eSIMs do not transfer easily to another phone: in case of a breakdown or a device change, you may have to contact the provider or buy a new plan. Finally, an eSIM does not guarantee better coverage than a physical SIM card: it depends on the local network the plan connects to, and the signal can remain weak in rural areas of Maremma or inside buildings. Read the validity period, the amount of data and the tethering rules carefully before paying.

A clever little habit: download offline maps before leaving; the Tuscan detours are charming, searching for them at the wrong moment much less so.
