In Antiquity, Tuscany was calledEtruria, the land of Etruscans. The Romans called this people Tusci or Etrusci, and it is from "Tusci" that the current name comes: at the end of the Roman Empire, the region became the Tusciawhich gave "Toscana" in Italian.
Ancient Etruria did not correspond exactly to present-day Tuscany. It extended from theArno at the Tiber and also included northern Latium and part of Umbria, with cities such as Tarquinia, Vulci or Orvieto. In the Middle Ages, the march of Tuscia governs the region, then come the republics of Florence, Siena and Pisa, and finally the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, created in 1569 by the Medici. The name Tuscia still designates today the region of Viterbo— in Latium, just south of Maremma.
