The most famous wine from Tuscany is generally the Chianti, especially well known abroad. It is a red wine made mainly from sangiovese: the Chianti DOCG appellation requires at least 70 %. Attention, Chianti and Chianti Classico ne désignent pas exactement la même appellation : le second vient d’une zone plus délimitée, entre Florence et Sienne.
If you were thinking of the most prestigious Tuscan wine, or the one most often mentioned in connoisseurs' conversations, it is rather the Brunello di Montalcino. It is produced around Montalcino, from sangiovese, and must wait until the 1st of January of the fifth year after the harvest avant sa mise en vente. Il est donc généralement plus cher que des Chianti courants, même si le prix dépend beaucoup du producteur et du millésime.
In short: for a name immediately associated with Tuscany, ask for a Chianti; for a more ambitious bottle to give as a gift or to keep, look at the Brunello. Chianti can be softer and more approachable when young, while Brunello is often more structured and calls for a meal worthy of it.
