What equipment for the hike in Pitigliano?

To hike in Pitigliano, take hiking shoes with a good grip sole, water, a hat and a light layer against rain: the Vie Cave include steps and tuff passages that can be slippery, especially in the shade after rain. Avoid sandals and smooth-soled shoes. A pole can help on descents, but keep your hands free if you're not used to walking with one.

For the full tour of the Vie Cave, allow about 10 km and 3 hours of walking: bring at least 1 to 1.5 liters of water per person, more if it's hot, as well as a small snack. Part of the trails is shaded, but there are also exposed sections: sunscreen and sunglasses remain useful, especially in summer. Light pants and insect repellent can be welcome in vegetated areas.

In spring and autumn, add a compact waterproof jacket; in winter, plan for a warm layer, as the bottom of the sunken paths can stay damp and cool. Check the weather before setting out and, after heavy rain, be especially careful on the tuff. For a simple walk on a short path, you don't need mountaineering gear: good shoes and water are the essentials.

At the Vie Cave, the landscape shifts from wide open spaces to tuff corridors: it gives the walk a slight feel of exploration rather than a race for kilometers.
