What to see in Civitella Paganico?

À Civitella Paganico, plan mainly to discover two medieval villages: Civitella Marittima, perched on a hill, and Paganico, in the Ombrone valley. In Civitella Marittima, stroll through the narrow streets and along the remains of the ramparts to enjoy the views over the countryside. The village is small: allow about 1 hour to wander at your leisure. The Badia Ardenghesca, away from the center, is worth a detour if Romanesque architecture interests you, but the whole complex is in poor condition; don't expect to visit an intact abbey.

À Paganico, look out for the old gates, the brick houses and the chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, known for its frescoes. The two villages are about 9 km apart: the car makes getting around easier, as the municipality also includes several hamlets. If you want variety, the Terme di Petriolo offer outdoor hot water pools in the Farma valley; check the conditions on site before setting off, especially after heavy rain.

For a leisurely visit of both centers, allow half a day; this is not a destination of major museums or urban activities, but rather a stopover of villages and landscapes. In autumn, you can also aim for the Festa del Bucounto in Civitella Marittima, dedicated to seasonal flavors: the dates change with each edition, so it's best to confirm them before planning your visit.

I would keep this stop as a breathing space, rather than trying to check everything off at a running pace. It makes a lovely counterpoint if your itinerary already strings together the art cities!
