For the sea in Tuscany, look especially at the Maremma if you want natural beaches, the Coast of the Etruscans to alternate swimming and pine groves, and the Versilia if you prefer seaside resorts with services. In Maremma, Marina di Alberese offers a long beach in the natural park, but little shade: arrive early in summer and check the parking access conditions before setting off. For an easier swim with children, the beach of Feniglia, near Orbetello, stretches for about 7 km, with a pine grove behind the sand.
On the Etruscan Coast, choose Rimigliano for its sandy beach lined with pines, or the gulf of Baratti for a more sheltered setting and seabed suited to snorkelling and diving. Cala Violina, in Maremma, is a popular cove, but you need to allow about 30 minutes of walking from the car park: it is not the best choice with a lot of luggage or young children. In Versilia, Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are better equipped, but a large part of the coastline is occupied by paid establishments.
To enjoy the beaches, aim generally for June to September ; July and August are the busiest months. Free beaches cost nothing, while parasols and sun loungers at establishments are paid and their rates vary according to the period and location: check the price before booking.
