How to get to Pitigliano from Rome?

The simplest way to get from Rome to Pitigliano, is to rent a car: allow about 150 to 160 km and 2 h 30 to 3 h of driving, depending on traffic and your starting point. The route usually goes via the highway towards Orte, then via Viterbo and the regional road SS74. The last few kilometers are on secondary roads; allow a bit more time if you drive at night or if you're not used to narrow roads. Pitigliano is perched on a hill and parking spaces in the center are limited: aim for the parking lots at the entrance of the village.

Without a car, it's possible, but much less convenient. You can get to Viterbo from Rome, then take a Cotral bus to Pitigliano; this service runs on weekdays and the schedules don't necessarily match your arrival well. There is no train to Pitigliano, and the journey with connections can take about 4 to 5 hours, sometimes more. Another option is to take the train to Orbetello-Monte Argentario, then a local bus, but departures are limited: check the schedules for the exact date, especially on weekends and public holidays. For a day trip from Rome, I advise against public transport.

The real trap is treating Pitigliano as a mere stopover: give yourself time to wander, this village is best savored without watching the clock.
