To reach the Maremma from Rome, take a train towards Grosseto or Orbetello-Monte Argentario, or rent a car if you want to explore the inland areas. The Maremma is vast: the best arrival point depends on your accommodation, and there is no single station serving the whole region.
From Roma Termini, the trains to Grosseto generally take around 1 h 40 to 2 h. To Orbetello-Monte Argentario, allow about 1 h 30 to 2 h, depending on the train. Frequencies and durations vary; check the timetable on the day of your trip. From these stations, you can continue by bus, but the connections are not always convenient, especially on Sundays or in the evening.
By car, allow about 180 à 200 km and 2 h 30 to 3 h to Grosseto, via theA12 then the SS1 Aurelia. In summer, traffic can lengthen the trip. It's the simplest option for visiting villages like Pitigliano or remote beaches: Pitigliano has no train station, and buses to the hinterland require carefully planning your connections. If you are only staying in Grosseto or Orbetello, the train may be enough; for getting around, a car is clearly more practical.
