The comparisons that matter: Valdarno
Pairs picked by the code from the best-rated ones; Tosco's word is calculated once, from the same facts.
vs
Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC – Petrolo or Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC – Petrolo?
Same rating, two different addresses · 7.5 vs 7,4
vs
Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro or Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro?
Same score, two different addresses · 7.3 vs 7,3
Tosco The Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro 2020 stands out with a price of €40 versus €48 for the 2017, an €8 gap that tips the balance. Both share the same score of 7.3 and identical criticism of their limited Tuscan roots, but the 2020 offers a slightly more reasonable value at €40.44. If your budget is tight, choose the 2020; if you prefer an older vintage with aging potential, the 2017 remains an option, but know that you pay more for an almost identical profile.
vs
Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC – Petrolo or Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro?
Two budgets: €48 vs €78 · 7.5 vs 7,3
Tosco At €39.12 for the 75 cl, the Torrione 2023 from Petrolo offers you a more assertive Valdarno terroir and a gentler price, perfect for a meat meal without ruining you, even though its distinctions remain modest. The Il Borro Toscana IGT 2017, on the other hand, is for lovers of recognition: its three bicchieri and its multiple 90-point scores justify a higher budget, but its Bordeaux-style character and vague IGT Tuscany origin make it less typical, ideal for an initiated table rather than a discovery of the Valdarno. Their score difference is slim (7.5 versus 7.3); choose according to your wallet and your desire for prestige, not because of a major quality gap.
vs
Valdarno di Sopra DOC – Il Borro or Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro?
Two budgets: €24 vs €40 · 7.4 vs 7,3
Tosco At Il Borro, the Valdarno di Sopra DOC at €24 offers you a 100% Sangiovese more rooted in its terroir and rated 7.4, with a typicity score of 7.6 versus 6.8 for the IGT; the latter, at €40, compensates with striking recognition (three bicchieri, 90/100) and is ideal for impressing. If your budget is tight or you want a pure Tuscan wine, choose the DOC; the IGT suits lovers of international style and distinctions. The score gap is slim (7.4 versus 7.3), so everything hinges on whether you want terroir or prestige.
vs
Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC – Petrolo or Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro?
Two budgets: €40 vs €78 · 7.5 vs 7,3
Tosco The first, the Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC – Petrolo, is for you if you're looking for a strong local anchor, with its named appellation and typical blend, despite its €78 bottle price and more modest recognition. The second, the Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro, suits you better if you value prestigious distinctions such as the three bicchieri, at a gentler €40, even though its international style is less typical. The differences are slim on versatility at the table, but the first bets on terroir and the second on recognition, so choose according to your priority: authenticity or acclaim.
My advice: Valdarno
The highest Toscana Cachée rating goes to the two Val d'Arno di Sopra from Petrolo, rated 7.5, but the key to the choice is price, since the 1.5-liter format works out to €39.12 per 75 cl, clearly less than the €43.85 for the bottles and 3-liter size, for the same wine and the same four Bibenda grappoli. If you want the best value for money, the Valdarno di Sopra from Il Borro at €24 is unbeatable on paper, with the best versatility rating at the table (7.8) and very detailed winemaking, which you won't find at Petrolo. Be aware, though, that none of these wines specify being organic, vegan or sulfite-free, and the two Toscana IGTs from Il Borro, despite their three bicchieri, remain expensive (€40 to €48) for a blend without a clear terroir anchor. Between the safety of Petrolo's DOCs and Il Borro's economy, it all depends on your budget: I would lean toward Petrolo's large format if you like distinctions, or Il Borro's 2019 Sangiovese for a convivial table.
