The wine
I recommend the Tignanello Toscana 2023 for its history as much as for its singular place in the Tuscan landscape: it brings Sangiovese into dialogue with Bordeaux varieties, in a style aged in oak. Coming from the historic Antinori estate, in the heart of Chianti Classico, it carries the memory of a movement that dared to break with habits to better express its territory.
Tenuta Tignanello lies within the Chianti Classico zone, in Tuscany. The vineyard mentioned for this cuvée covers 57 hectares, planted on calcareous soils between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. This is where the blend of the 2023 vintage is born: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wine is labeled IGP Toscana, a designation that accompanies this freedom of blending, beyond the traditional rules of Chianti.
Its history is tied to that of the "Super Tuscans", those wines that marked a first Italian wine revolution in the 1960s. After Tenuta San Guido's Sassicaia, the Antinori Tignanello contributed to this evolution by incorporating non-traditional varieties and by being the first Sangiovese aged in barrique. Produced since 1971, it is made only in the vintages judged to be the best. The Antinori house, which claims more than six centuries of winemaking history, has made it one of its emblematic wines. For this cuvée, vinification includes a careful maceration and a malolactic fermentation in conical tanks. Aging lasts fifteen months in French and Hungarian oak casks, after which the wine rests twelve months in bottle before release.
The tasting notes available do not detail the color or any precise aromas: I prefer not to attribute fruit or spice notes to you that are not documented. The announced profile sits in the middle of the fruity-spicy scale and of the scale running from young to oaky, while the body is rated 7 out of 9. These benchmarks suggest a wine of fine presence, where the wood accompanies the blend without erasing its balance. The fifteen months in barrique give a concrete element for understanding its style, without pretending to replace a personal tasting.
I would serve it with red meat, white meats or a nice plate of cured meats, pairings suggested for this wine. The variety of these companions lets you choose according to the occasion: a meal built around a cut of meat, or a simpler table where the charcuterie opens the conversation. If you enjoy structured Tuscan reds and stories of terroir that unfold over time, the Tignanello 2023 deserves a place at your table. Take the time to taste it and see how its blend and aging reveal themselves in your glass.
