The wine
In La Quinta 2022, the Sangiovese shows itself in a light that is both ripe and precise: brandied cherry sets the tone, while sweet spices and a discreetly mineral finish bring nuance. I recommend it if you're looking for an expressive Tuscan red with structure that doesn't feel heavy.
La Quinta is the wine of the Podere Giodo estate, a personal project of Carlo Ferrini carried out with his daughter Bianca. Ferrini's career is closely tied to Sangiovese: he played an important role in the "Chianti Classico 2000" project, focused in particular on replanting, the choice of rootstocks, and the study of soils. He later chose Montalcino to pursue his own vision of the grape. La Quinta 2022 is labeled IGT Toscana and made from Sangiovese. The available information does not specify the vineyard plot or its soil characteristics; it's better to stick to what the bottle clearly expresses rather than invent a detailed terroir for it.
The estate claims an aesthetic built on elegance, fruit purity, freshness and precision. For this vintage, aging is divided between six months in barrel, six months in amphora and six months in bottle. In the glass, the color is an intense ruby red. The nose combines pronounced notes of brandied cherry with a touch of leather, sweet spices and delicate floral nuances. On the palate, the wine is intense and medium-bodied; its ripe tannins envelop the palate before giving way to a subtly mineral finish. I find this balance between ripe fruit and a well-defined structure interesting, without one erasing the other.
I would serve it with roast meat, pasta with a long-simmered tomato sauce, or grilled vegetables: dishes hearty enough to stand up to its tannins, but without masking its cherry and floral aromas. It can also have its place at a dinner where you take the time to follow its evolution in the glass. If you enjoy Sangiovese and reds that combine ripe fruit, relief and restraint, La Quinta 2022 deserves a place on your table.
