A Torre, in Maremma, is a tower, often coastal and used as a watchtower. You will see many along the coastline, remnants of the defenses against Barbary pirates. They have an obvious historical role, but for you, the traveler, they mainly mark strategic viewpoints. They are often perched on promontories, offering breathtaking panoramas of the sea and the coast. It is an excellent landmark for your hikes or your swims, and a point of interest for a successful photo. Some are restored and inhabited, others are in a state of ruins that are accessible.
