mastic tree

mastic tree

The mastic tree is that Mediterranean shrub you see everywhere in Maremma, with its small leathery leaves and its berries that turn red then black. It makes up a good part of the maquis, that dense and fragrant vegetation covering the hills. You can smell its resinous, slightly peppery scent as you walk around. It is one of the olfactory markers of Maremma, inseparable from the local atmosphere. Its branches are also sometimes used to smoke local products. It gives you a concrete idea of the natural environment here, well beyond the postcard image.
