A bourg, here, is the village perched on top of a hill, with its ramparts or what remains of them, its church on the square, and streets so narrow that a car barely fits through. In Maremma, you find them everywhere: Massa Marittima, Pitigliano, Sorano, Castel del Piano, or Montemerano. Don't expect a shopping area. The bourg comes alive mostly in the morning and late afternoon, when residents come out. At midday, many bars and shops close. Park in the lot below and walk up: it's the only way to really see the place, and the slopes are steeper than they look on the map.
