Comment on noteOur opinion
Mastrojanni, in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, is first and foremost an address that immerses you in the essence of Montalcino. Here, there's no fuss, just the real thing, with a cuisine that stays true to the land and the estate's wines. It's a grounded experience, not a tourist postcard.
The house, under the guidance of chef Tommaso Brandini, is renowned for its "meat cuisine", but doesn't stop there. You'll find "Salumi di cinta senese, schiacciata, olive e fermentati da condividere", a starter that immediately immerses you in the terroir. Cheese lovers won't be left out with the "Formaggi a latte crudo di pecora e capra e miele da condividere", a selection that speaks of local richness. But what's surprising is also seeing "Tonno rosso, cetrioli, mostarda in grani e cipollotto" on the menu, proof that the cuisine knows how to open up to more marine flavors, without betraying its Italian and Mediterranean roots.
The atmosphere, from what people say, is that of a country inn, with a view and a peaceful atmosphere. It's an isolated place, which adds to its charm and its character as a "destination". You don't come here by chance, you come to seek a certain quality of life, a suspended moment. The service is often described as attentive, which is the baseline when you offer cuisine of this level.
If you're looking for a table that doesn't cheat, where the quality of the product is central and where food and wine pairing is a given given the estate, Mastrojanni is an address to consider. It's a complete experience, where the cuisine, the setting and the service align to offer you a sincere immersion in the very best the Maremma has to offer. No frills, just the right taste and respect for the product.
