The place
Le lieu figure comme sentier de randonnée en Maremme, mais sans tracé ni accès documentés, rien ne permet d'en conseiller le détour.
👥 Who it's for: For hikers and nature lovers seeking breathtaking panoramas.
Hello dear friends of authentic Tuscany! Today, I'm taking you far from the hustle and bustle, to an island where nature reigns supreme and where the panoramas take your breath away. Get your hiking shoes ready, because we're off to conquer the Poggio della Pagana on Giglio Island!
Ah, Giglio Island! The second largest in the Tuscan archipelago, yet so often forgotten in favor of its more famous neighbors. And yet, 90% of its territory has remained wild, a haven of Mediterranean scrubland with intoxicating colors and scents. It is here, in the heart of this unspoiled nature, that Poggio della Pagana rises, the highest point of the island.
Just imagine: 496 meters above sea level, offering a 360° view over the entire territory, the Tuscan archipelago and even the mainland coast. It's an experience that promises guaranteed wonder.
Poggio della Pagana is only accessible on foot. Forget the car, it's not for it! And that's a good thing, it adds to the charm of the exploration. Several trails lead to the summit, with starting points from Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello or Campese. Accessibility requires a minimum of physical preparation.
For the more adventurous, the longest route starts from Giglio Porto, where the ferries dock. Allow about three hours of walking for this option. The path will first take you towards Giglio Castello, a charming medieval village perched at 400 meters above sea level, dominated by the Rocca Aldobrandesca. It's a sight in itself!
Once past Giglio Castello, the trail will guide you through a pine forest, with the possibility of detours to panoramic viewpoints. We recommend heading for the Poggio della Chiusa, a rocky promontory at 485 meters above sea level. Here, tables and benches invite you to a well-deserved picnic break, with a breathtaking view of the Giglio Porto coastline and the Argentario on the horizon.
From there, the path is not very steep to reach the Col des Portes, which separates Poggio della Chiusa from Poggio della Pagana. Along the way, you will come across the fascinating rock formations of Cote Ciombella, a megalithic site of granite boulders. After a short flat stretch, one last slightly steeper climb awaits you, and there you go, you've made it: the summit of Poggio della Pagana!
Another option, more demanding, is to start from Giglio Campese. A difficult 19.3 km hike with an elevation gain of 980 m, lasting about 5h53. Whichever route you choose, don't forget:
Upon reaching the summit, at 496 meters above sea level, you will be greeted by a simple cross and a wooden table with benches. It is the ideal place to sit down, catch your breath and, above all, soak in this 360-degree panoramic view.
The untouched beauty of the landscape is breathtaking. The deep blue of the sea, the intense green of the scrub, the secret coves... it is a living spectacle unfolding before you.
Poggio della Pagana is not just a point on a map, it is an invitation to connect with nature, to push yourself a little, and to be rewarded with landscapes of rare beauty. It is the very essence of hidden Tuscany that we love so much to share with you.
So, who is ready to lace up their sneakers and discover this jewel of Giglio Island? We guarantee you unforgettable memories!
See you soon for new Tuscan adventures,
