👥 Who it's for: For travelers in search of authenticity, history and breathtaking views, far from the crowds.
Dzień dobry, my dear explorers of authentic Tuscany! Today, I'm taking you far from the hustle and bustle of the crowds, to an island where time seems to have stood still. Set course for Isola del Giglio, and more precisely for its beating heart: Giglio Castello. Believe me, it's not every day you get the chance to stroll through a village that has managed to preserve its medieval soul with such intensity.
Just imagine: after a pleasant ferry crossing from Porto Santo Stefano, you arrive at Giglio Porto, a charming little port. But to reach our treasure, you have to climb. A winding road takes us to about 400 meters above sea level, where Giglio Castello nestles. From the very first hairpin bends, you feel history enveloping you. And what a history!
Giglio Castello is much more than a simple village; it is a living fortress, the administrative seat and historical memory of the second largest island in the Tuscan archipelago. As you pass through its gates, you are immediately transported centuries back. Its imposing walls, built by the Aldobrandeschi from the 12th century onwards and reinforced by the Pisans, then by the Medici, entirely surround the village. They tell of centuries of defense against pirates, notably the devastating raids of the 16th century. Today, you can still admire these ten watchtowers, some quadrangular (medieval), others semi-circular (Renaissance), which once kept watch over the waves.
The village itself is an enchanting maze of narrow cobbled streets, mysterious arches, cool underground passages and steep stairways carved into the rock. The stone houses, huddled against one another, seem to be sharing ancestral secrets. It is a real joy to get lost there, to discover at every street corner an architectural detail, a flowered balcony, an unsuspected little square. It is no coincidence that Giglio Castello is ranked among the «most beautiful villages in Italy»!
Proudly overlooking the village, the Rocca Aldobrandesca, also known as the Pisan Fortress, is a central element of Giglio Castello. This imposing medieval defensive structure, enlarged over the centuries, offers absolutely spectacular views. I was particularly moved by the idea that, from there, one could once communicate with the mainland by means of smoke or fire signals to warn of the arrival of enemy ships. It was a true center of life in the event of a prolonged siege, with its cisterns, vegetable gardens and reserves.
The fortress itself is a fascinating testament to the defensive ingenuity of the era. Exploring its walls and walkways, you can easily imagine the sentinels keeping watch over the Tyrrhenian Sea. For other medieval treasures in Tuscany, don't hesitate to explore Massa Marittima or the other towns and villages of the region.
Beyond the fortifications, Giglio Castello also harbors cultural treasures. The ancient Church of Saint Peter the Apostle, dating from the 12th century, but with a Baroque façade following a renovation in the 18th century, is a place of peace and contemplation. It preserves objects of great value, such as the treasure of Pope Innocent XII, an ivory crucifix attributed to Giambologna, and above all, the relic of the arm of Saint Mamilian, the island's patron saint. Did you know that weapons abandoned by pirates in 1799 are also on display there? A touch of adventure even in spirituality!
On September 15th, the village comes alive for the feast of Saint Mamilian, the most important event of the year. A perfect opportunity to discover the fervor and local traditions.
But what makes Giglio Castello truly unforgettable are its panoramic views. Thanks to its elevated position, the village offers incredible views of the surrounding islands and the mainland. From the Varco dei Lombi, you can watch magical sunsets over the sea, gilding the village rooftops. The Piazza dei Lombi looks out over the northern coast and the island of Elba. And from the Argentario Belvedere, in clear weather, you can take in the Monte Argentario peninsula and the entire Tuscan archipelago. The Church Square, too, combines spirituality and landscape, offering a breathtaking view of the port and the southern sea. Every viewpoint is a living postcard! To continue exploring the wonders of the island, don't hesitate to head to Giglio Campese.
Do zobaczenia w Toskanii !
