👥 Who it's for: For lovers of nature, seascapes, and easy walks with spectacular views.

Dear friends of authentic Tuscany, hello!

Today I'm taking you to one of the most charming islands of the Tuscan archipelago: Isola del Giglio. And more precisely, to meet its natural emblem: the Faraglione di Campese.

Forget for a moment the clichés of rolling Tuscany. Here, it's the sea that reigns, a deep blue sea lined with secret coves and wild landscapes. The Faraglione di Campese, that rocky sentinel standing proudly facing the beach of Campese, is the very embodiment of this island beauty.

The Faraglione di Campese: a natural icon of Isola del Giglio

Imagine an imposing rocky peak, sculpted by winds and waves, emerging from crystal-clear waters. That's the Faraglione di Campese, a monolith about 23 meters high which, together with the nearby Medicean Tower, composes a scene of breathtaking beauty. It is the undisputed symbol of the bay of Campese, a place where nature created a raw and powerful work of art.

The Faraglione is not just a simple geological formation; it is the focal point of a stunning seascape, especially at sunset. It is at this precise moment that the raking light sets the rock ablaze, adorning it with warm hues, from golden to deep orange, and its profile stands out as a majestic silhouette against a blazing sky. A sight not to be missed.

Mining history and island landmark

The bay of Campese, where the Faraglione nestles, has a rich history, intimately linked to mining. This area was once an important pyrite extraction center. Until the 1960s, the region buzzed with activity, with miners working in the galleries of the Franco promontory. Moreover, by taking the trail leading to the Faraglione, you can still glimpse the remains of that era: concrete pillars and cableway grids used to load ore onto ships. A fascinating trace of the island's industrial past, which today contrasts with the tranquility of the place.

The Faraglione itself, although natural, has always been a landmark for sailors and a point of contemplation for locals. Its imposing silhouette is a constant reminder of the power of nature and the island's geological history.

Discovering the Faraglione: the ideal itinerary

One of the best ways to appreciate the Faraglione is to take the Sentiero 302, the «Faraglione trail». It's an accessible walk, offering breathtaking panoramas and allowing you to soak up the island's unique atmosphere.

Trail 302: from Campese to the Faraglione

  • Starting point: The western end of the beach of Campese, near the old ore loading quay (opposite the Medicean Tower and after the restaurant La Miniera).
  • Length: About 1.1 km (one way) or 2.4 km (round trip including the Pozzarelli beach).
  • Average time: Allow about 30 minutes one way to the viewpoint, and an hour for the full round trip with the Pozzarelli beach.
  • Difficulty: Easy (E for «Escursionistico» according to the Italian classification), but watch out for a few passages.
  • Elevation gain: Not significant, about 25 m of positive elevation gain.

The route begins gently, along the coast and through a charming little holm oak forest. Very quickly, you will reach the Pertuso Beach, an adorable little beach where the Mediterranean scrubland stretches almost to the sea, exuding its intoxicating scents. It's an ideal spot for a first break, with your feet in the water.

After Pertuso, the trail climbs up a small cliff. A rope handrail is there to help you. This is a section that requires a bit of attention and good shoes. Then, the path becomes gentler again, winding through low vegetation that reveals increasingly spectacular views.

The highlight of this walk is the belvedere, located right opposite the Faraglione. From there, the view is breathtaking: you will take in the Campese bay, Punta del Fenaio with its lighthouse to the north, and on clear days, the distant island of Montecristo to the west. But the star of the show is, of course, the Faraglione itself, so close that you feel you could touch it.

For swimming enthusiasts, don't hesitate to make a small detour on trail 302A to go down to the Pozzarelli Beach, an isolated pebble cove, perfect for a refreshing dip after the effort. This exploration of the beaches and coves of the Isola del Giglio is a real breath of fresh air.

Practical tips for a successful visit

  • The ideal time: Without hesitation, the sunset. The colors are magical and the atmosphere is incredibly romantic.
  • Shoes: Closed, comfortable shoes are essential, especially for the section with the rope.
  • Hydration: Don't forget your water bottle, especially in summer. The trail is mostly sunny.
  • Connectivity: Prepare for a digital detox! In the western part of the island, the mobile signal is often absent. Take the opportunity to connect with nature!
  • Access: Giglio Campese is well served by local buses from Giglio Porto (the bus stop is about 400 meters from the start of the trail). To get to the Isola del Giglio, ferries depart regularly from Porto Santo Stefano. The Isola del Giglio is a wild pearl of the Tuscan archipelago an absolute must-see.

A little tip from a four-legged friend: do trail 302 at the very end of the afternoon, because seeing the setting sun set this 23-meter peak ablaze from the Pozzarelli cove is one of the most beautiful spectacles in the entire Tuscan archipelago!
