Where can you find access to the Via Cava del Cavone?

Access to the Via Cava del Cavone is located near the necropolis of Sovana, on the SP 22 towards San Martino sul Fiora. From the village of Sovana, allow about 2 km by car : after a short tunnel and the bridge over the Calesine stream, you will find the parking lot of the archaeological area. This is the easiest starting point; there is no marked direct access from the centre of Sovana.

From the parking lot, follow the signs to the necropolis and look for the wooden sign of the Cavone, on the left side of the path, near the ticket office. Depending on the route taken, the entrance is reached after a short walk, sometimes with a slight climb: it can be easy to miss if you expect to see it directly from the road. The Cavone is part of the archaeological area of Sovana; check on site with the ticket office whether access is included in the route open on the day of your visit. Bring shoes with good grip: the tuff path can be uneven and slippery when wet.
