If I have to choose one, I would say Sovanain the Maremma: it is a very small medieval hamlet, rather quiet, where people come more for the alleys and the ancient stones than for a long list of shops or activities.
Its center consists of a short stroll, around the piazza del Pretorio and its historic buildings. The Etruscan tombs of the nearby necropolis also give concrete interest to the visit, beyond the scenery. Pitigliano is located about 7 km awayor about ten minutes by car: you can easily see both in the same day, but Pitigliano is livelier and more visited. To explore the paths carved into the tuff, plan more time in the surrounding area.
A small caveat: “authentic” does not mean you will find a lively village all year round. In Sovana, the range of shops and restaurants is limited, and some establishments may have reduced hours off-season; check before leaving if you plan to have lunch there. A car is handy for exploring this corner, especially if you want to reach the archaeological sites. In spring or autumn, you will generally enjoy a quieter visit than in the height of summer.
