The nicest city to visit in Tuscany, if you want a lively historic center that's easy to get around, is Lucca. Its ramparts form a loop of 4.2 km where you can walk or rent a bike; allow about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 on foot without long breaks. Inside, go through the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, the little streets around the Via Fillungo and the Torre Guinigi. One day is enough to see the center at a leisurely pace, with time for lunch on a terrace.
I would choose it over Florence if you prefer to stroll without organizing your day around very crowded museums. On the other hand, if you're coming mainly for the big museums and famous works, Florence is a better choice; for a more spectacular medieval atmosphere, also look at Siena. Lucca is quieter, but it can feel small if you're looking for several days of varied sightseeing: plan for one day instead, or two nights if you want to take your time and explore the surroundings. Spring and autumn are pleasant for walking on the ramparts; in summer, do this stroll early or late in the day.
