Where is Sorano located?

Sorano is located in the southeast of the Tuscany, in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of inland Maremma, near the border with Lazio. The village stands on a tuff spur, a volcanic rock, in the area called theArea del Tufo, which also includes Pitigliano and Sovana. So it is not a seaside destination: the coast is quite a distance away, and the surroundings are mostly made up of hills, small towns and country roads.

To find your way around, Pitigliano is about 9 km away by road, or roughly fifteen minutes by car depending on the route. Grosseto is some 80 km away ; allow around1 hour 30 by car, sometimes more depending on traffic and the small roads taken. The area is easier to visit with a car, as public transport links and frequencies can be limited. Sorano works well as a stop to discover the tuff villages and nearby archaeological sites, but you should plan for road travel to reach the major cities or the coast.
