To vary the scenery, first look at the gulf of Baratti, the coast of the Maremma and the Monte Argentario : these are three very different areas. At Baratti, you have a beach next to a pine grove, with Populonia and its Etruscan remains nearby; it's a good choice if you want to combine swimming and sightseeing, but the beach can get crowded in summer. Further south, Cala Violina offers a bay lined with Mediterranean scrub, accessible via a trail of about 30 minutes on foot : bring good shoes, water, and expect few services on site.
For long beaches and a more natural setting, choose Marina di Alberese, in the Maremma Park; access may be regulated depending on the season, so check the conditions before you go. If you prefer coves and rocky views, explore theArgentario, around Porto Santo Stefano or Porto Ercole: some beaches are reached via steep trails, and a car makes getting around easier. For a simpler day out, with shops and beach establishments, Castiglione della Pescaia is convenient. In high summer, especially in July and August, expect larger crowds; June and September are often quieter, though the weather can be less reliable.
