What equipment for visiting the hot springs of Maremma

For the Cascate del Mulino, near Saturnia, bring a swimsuit, a towel, sandals that grip well or water shoes, and dry clothes. The travertine bottom can be slippery and uneven : avoid walking there barefoot. Also slide your belongings into a waterproof bag, and leave jewelry and valuables in your car, out of sight. An old swimsuit is preferable: the sulfurous water can leave a lingering smell in the fabric.

The natural pools are accessible all year round and the water stays around 35 to 37 °C, but plan on a warm layer to get dressed again in winter or in windy weather. In summer, add sunscreen, a hat and drinking water; there is little shade at the edge of the pools. The facilities on site are limited compared to a spa establishment: don't count on a locker or a comfortable changing room, and come already dressed if you want to avoid changing outdoors. The showers, cabins and other services may depend on the developed area and the season. Keep a small pocket for your phone and your keys, without putting them down at the water's edge.

At the Cascate del Mulino, the charm lies precisely in the raw side: forget the chic spa look and enjoy the bath as it comes, without fuss.
